It Will Be Too Late Before You Recognize the Cost
My name is Matt Theriault. I’m the CEO of Epic Real Estate.
I just got off a very long drive – almost 12 hours long – to visit my mother.
I had a lot of alone time to listen to audio books and podcasts, and it was really enlightening. If you ever have the opportunity to get away for a while, I highly recommend it. Just separate yourself from the daily grind and have some new thoughts put into your head.
Giving Up Fancy
One of the new thoughts I took out of this whole experience was being fancy.
I’m going to give it up… because it’s expensive.
And I’m not talking about being fancy with material things like cars, houses, or clothes. What I’m talking about is your mindset being fancy.
My mindset has been fancy – disgustingly so. And looking back, it’s cost me a lot.
You know, when I first heard about Bitcoin, I thought it was a total scam. I rejected it.
And maybe it is a scam – I guess it remains to be seen.
But looking back, if I had gotten in when I was first told about it, I’d be a millionaire many times over just from the investment alone.
“Breaking Bad? Are you sure?”
And I think about the first time someone said to me, “Oh, you’ve got to watch the TV show Breaking Bad. It’s the greatest show. You’re going to love it.”
I rejected that for three or four seasons. I think I was the last person on earth to actually sit down and watch it. I’m now in the know in regards to that show.
“Podcasting? Sounds dumb.”
And then I think about when, back in 2008, I was first told about podcasting. I was like, “That sounds dumb. I’ve got other things to do. I’ve got to go buy and sell houses.”
Luckily, there was a freak incident where I was listening to an audio book by Tim Ferriss. I remember it was the last one he had available, so I went on a search for new material by him to see if there was anything else out there.
I searched iTunes, and what came up was this little audio recording, and it was free.
So I downloaded that and listened to it. It was a great interview. I can’t even remember which one it was or who it was with, but I was like, “Wow, I’m listening to a podcast! This is what a podcast is? These are great.”
And if I didn’t have that freak interaction where I accidentally discovered what a podcast was – if that didn’t happen, that one little epiphany right there, and my taking it and putting it with my real estate investing business – I can’t even imagine where I would be today.
The point is, I’m going to give up being fancy. With the amount of new information that comes out on a daily basis and the multiple mediums that information is delivered through, you just can’t afford to reject anything these days. You just never know what’s going to happen.
The world is changing fast, and if you don’t change with it, you’re going to be left behind.
This is not the time to be fancy. Not in the world that we’re living in right now. It’s expensive. It’s costly.
So I’m giving it up.
